Day 37 Wembury Beach to (Bigbury) (14.25 miles)

The weather was pretty rough this morning and we were wondering whether we should even set out, as there weren't any stop offs on route if it got really bad.

Fortunately by the time we got to Noss Mayo and started walking it was only a light drizzle.

We walked along the road to the start of the coast path where you would normally join it off the ferry. The path went up through woods and past some houses and then meandered towards the coast and emerged on top of the cliff with amazing views. Well they would have been amazing but it was very foggy so we couldn't actually see very much.

The path was great, a nice wide grassy track and pretty flat, past ponies and sheep and looking down at the rough sea below. It was so great to catch up with Tabby as we walked along on easy paths.

After Stoke, where there were loadsmof static caravans, the path got a bit more hilly, the biggest of which came next to St Anchorites rock, a bit granite tor.

After a quick sandwich stop on top of the hill, we made our way down to the mouth of the River Erme, past a nice beach and to the point where we would have got the ferry, if it had been running, which we knew it wasn't.

Here we had a bit of a palaver. Firstly, no reception at all. Secondly, once we got to a house and begged to use their phone to ring a taxi, none could come and get us to take us to the other side of the river, as they were all on school runs. We were miles from anywhere, and given that a lift from the man at the house wasn't forthcoming, we trudged a mile along the road to the village.

There wasn't much here either so after begging again at a small garage for a lift unsuccessfully, we started to walk back to the car (4 miles.by road). We managed on the walk back to thumb a lift from a really nice man called Simon, who had a friend diagnosed with MND, so not only dropped us back to try car but also donated £10! Amazing. This chance meeting with someone affected by MND was worth our unfinished day (as we decided that we didn't have time to drive around the river and do the last 4 miles, the weather was also still rank).

So, as to not disrupt my schedule I will come back and do the bit I missed after I've finished the whole walk. Having gone 5 1/2 weeks without messing up any days so far has been pretty good. That's some of rhe problems with walking at this time of year, but in future I will have to be more organised!

Nice meal in the pub with Tab before she dropped me back the b&b.
